Orcas on My Mind

There’s something unforgettable about standing at the edge of a vast blue pool as a sleek black-and-white form rises from the depths. On a visit to SeaWorld tonight, I watched the orcas during one of their educational encounters—moments of powerful swimming, precise maneuvers, and clear displays of intelligence and social connection. On the bus ride back to the hotel, those images kept replaying. Watching these animals moved me to reflect on the remarkable capacity for recovery, particularly in the context of brain injury.

During the presentation, SeaWorld highlighted how the park has helped save more than 43,000 animals. The trainers emphasized the orcas’ natural abilities—their size, speed, and learning capacity. They spoke about how orcas hunt in coordinated pods, communicate with complex vocalizations, and demonstrate problem-solving and deep social bonds. The animals glided with effortless strength, launched into breaches that sent spray high into the air, and responded to cues from their trainer with a precision that revealed sophisticated cognition.

Orcas possess some of the most complex brains among mammals. Their brains are highly corticalized, with extensive folding that supports advanced processing. Research has identified structures linked to social cognition, empathy, self-awareness, and the integration of emotion with higher-level thinking. Like humans, they form tight social groups, pass on cultural behaviors, and show resilience in the face of physical challenges. Wild orcas have been documented recovering from severe injuries such as boat strikes and propeller wounds, continuing to swim, hunt, and live within their pods for years afterward.

Drawing the Parallel to Human Recovery

Brain injury—whether traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, or other acquired damage—disrupts the intricate networks that make us who we are. Recovery is rarely linear. It demands neuroplasticity: the brain’s ability to reorganize, form new connections, and compensate for damaged areas. Progress depends on consistent therapy, motivation, social support, and the willingness to keep showing up even when improvement feels slow.

Watching the orcas, those parallels became vivid. Their intelligence and social complexity underscore that brains—human or cetacean—are not static. The coordinated movements and responsive interactions on display illustrate the value of practice, feedback, and connection. Just as an orca relies on its pod for survival and learning, and just as the animals at SeaWorld form close bonds with their trainers, people recovering from brain injury draw strength from family, therapists, peers, and community. Isolation hinders progress. Meaningful relationships and purposeful activity help rebuild function and hope. The orca needs its pod or trainer. The brain-injury survivor needs people.

A night at SeaWorld is full of sensory experiences: the splash of water, the scale of the animals, the shared awe of the crowd. For someone navigating the long road of recovery—or supporting a loved one who is—these moments can reframe the journey. The orcas’ physical power mirrors the determination required in physical therapy. Their social intelligence echoes the importance of connection during cognitive and emotional healing. Their documented ability to adapt after injury offers a living metaphor for neuroplasticity in action.

Of course, a theme-park encounter is not clinical treatment. Going to SeaWorld won't cure your brain injury. Yet inspiration matters. Seeing an animal that has overcome physical challenges and continues to thrive can plant a seed of possibility.

It also struck me that the crowd loved getting soaked. They leaned forward for the jumps and tail splashes, laughing as cold water hit them. If I had walked up and thrown my cup of water on the same people, they would have been annoyed. The difference? Expectation and appreciation of effort. They knew the splash was coming, and they understood it was the product of the orca’s power and training.

Brain injury recovery works the same way. People recovering need those around them to know what to expect—the slower processing, the fatigue, the emotional swings, the visible and invisible effort it takes just to show up. When others understand that, the “splash” becomes something they can lean into rather than resent. In most everyday contexts, people don’t want to be splashed. So the real question becomes: how do we prepare the world to be splashed by brain injury—with open eyes, realistic expectations, and genuine respect for the work it takes?

I think most of the people I lost after my injury simply didn’t understand the splashes I was making or the effort they required. They weren’t at the orca show. They were on their own path, and the splashes of improvement were not only unexpected—they were resented. Some colleagues tonught preferred to sit outside at the open bar, walk their own route, or stay at the hotel instead of go to the show. Some chose to go but sit outside the splash zone - supporting from a distance. But some enjoyed the splash. A few people—my wife and children—have learned how to appreciate my growth and progress. They enjoy the splash the way a child enjoys a splash pad or an adult leans into the wave from an orca’s tail. They enjoy swimming with me like the trainer even. This week one sister feels like she's finally turned around from her path and found a seat at the top, not ready for the splash yet, but ready to see it from a distance at least. I pray one day she'll join at the glass again, and maybe one day like a trainer learn to swim with me again.

I left SeaWorld carrying images of powerful jumps and the quiet intelligence in an orca’s eye as it looked toward its trainer. More than that, I left with a renewed appreciation for the brain’s capacity to adapt and the essential role of community in healing. Whether you visit for the spectacle, the education, or the chance to stand in the presence of these extraordinary animals, the experience can offer something unexpected: a reminder that resilience is written into the natural world.
