Rehearsal Approaching

In a few hours I will sit at a table with family, celebrating the wedding rehearsal for my brother. The wedding is tomorrow. It is a stark contrast to the save-the-date that just arrived from one of her sisters—a message that is impossible to ignore and somehow still manages to feel like another closed door.

The brother getting married still sent the “P” for praying back each day. He never asked me to leave him alone. He simply continued—unafraid to show his face, his life, his words. Prayers. Pictures. Family. Day after day. He was the only one who remained. While her sisters withdrew, rejected, and mistreated, he kept offering the ordinary evidence of the friendship we had, that they have withheld. That quiet consistency makes the surrounding silence even sharper. It never would have been hard for the others to stay. Five seconds most days. A short conversation on others.

If I woke each morning to that same evidence from her sisters—text threads that showed genuine interest in being in each other’s lives, invitations that arrived without obligation, small gestures that said “you still matter here”—none of this would stand out. The past would stay in the past. But the rejection is ongoing. It is the daily weather. Today is the same as yesterday, last month, and last year. “Leave me alone”. And because it never stops, I am forced to keep learning its shape, forced to notice the absence again and again, forced to confront the fact that the story being told about me does not match the man I am trying to be, the person I was for them, and the love I carry every day for them still.

I forgave her when she apologized for treating me like shit two years ago. That has been forgiven. Continuing to treat me the same way the next month, the month after that, and all the way up to today—those are new offenses. The past was forgiven. The harm of today I have forgiven too. She will just never know, because she has never reached out to acknowledge any of it. There is no grudge I have from the past. She simply behaves the same way towards me today of actively refusing to share her life and denying the opportunity to contact her, which forces the same reality: no relationship. Willingness to tolerate, not willing to want.

I tried to close the distance. When we lived near them I showed up, made space, and treated the relationship as something worth building. They had already decided otherwise. When the silence returned, again and again I was told I was the one holding a grudge—even though I no longer remember the old conflicts and my actions have never matched that story. Their daily decision to be left alone is the entire narrative of the harm today. I've done nothing against them today, yesterday, last month six months for sure. Yet, I still forgive them. They have simply closed every path to receive it. By demanding to be left alone, they are the ones keeping the past alive and making relationship impossible.

Tonight we will be with the one brother who never stopped sharing the ordinary pieces of his life, the one who kept the door open without asking me to walk through it on anyone else’s terms. Just as I was with him yesterday, the day before, last month, and last year. Because he actually wants to be together in life, not just tolerated together for a day.
